Microsoft Office: Which edition to choose?
Let's find out which MS Office edition is best suited to your needs
Microsoft Office comes in a variety of options which can; at times, be confusing for users. There are the numbered “Versions” e.g Microsoft Office 2021; and for each of these “versions” there are a set of “Editions” e.g Microsoft Office 2021 Home and Student for MAC. The Version represents the age of the product with numbers closer to the current year being generally newer builds, however, that does not mean that older versions are not updated.
In this article we are going to focus on the various “Editions” of Microsoft Office and what you can expect to receive should you decide to purchase them as well as conveying our tips to choosing the best edition for your needs.
Microsoft Office Home and Student
The Home and Student edition of Microsoft Office includes the core Office applications: Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel as well as OneNote. It is, as the name suggests, a lighter edition aimed at students and families who want access to the classic Microsoft Office apps for home use. It is worth mentioning that it is not legal to use this edition for work in businesses and institutions such as schools. It is for home PCs only.
Microsoft Office Home and Business
If you are a small business owner or are looking for volume licensing for an institution such as a school then Microsoft Home and Business is the edition for you. Similar to Microsoft Home and Student, this edition contains the core applications: Word, Powerpoint and Excel but instead of OneNote, comes with Outlook for email management and organisation.
Microsoft Office Professional
Office Professional is a more inclusive edition aimed at small businesses looking to grow. It includes the core apps: Word, Excel and Powerpoint as well as Outlook and for PC it also includes Microsoft Publisher for creating professional layouts and the database management system Microsoft Access.
Microsoft Office Professional Plus
This is much the same as Office Professional but includes Skype for Business and is only obtainable in volume licensing. It is for use in large corporations.
